In the mid-70's BIC came out with a line of turntables designed to compete with the many makes and models from Japan and Europe. The BIC turntables were engineered and made in the USA which was a rare feat at the time. And, the quality is surprisingly good. The 980 is a two speed (33 & 45 rpm) belt drive that is fully automatic or can be set to play in manual mode. It also has a repeat side function. And, it can used as a multi record changer with the proper stacking spindle.
The tonearm is precisely constructed and balanced. There is well dampened queuing and anti-skate functions. This tonearm holds highly regarded Shure M95ED cartridge with elliptical cut diamond stylus. The 980 also has fine speed adjustment (pitch) with an illuminated stroboscope. The table sits in an oiled walnut wood base with the trademark see through bottom and is protected by an original clear acrylic set on style dustcover also in remarkably good condition.
